Accelerated master's programs

To be eligible for admission to a 4+1 program, a student must:

• Be a declared major in the undergraduate degree corresponding to the desired master’s degree at the time of application.
• Have accumulated at least 75 hours toward the undergraduate degree at the time of application; 90 hours are required to begin the program.
• Have completed at least six credits of upper-division coursework in the major.
• Have at least a 3.0 cumulative ASU GPA at the time of application.
• Be on track to graduate with the undergraduate degree two semesters after being accepted into the program (one calendar year later than the acceptance date).

Students who do not meet these criteria may still apply to the MS degree in which they are interested upon graduation with a BS degree.

College of Health Solutions application packet

Application packets need to be submitted to the graduate support coordinator before June 1 to begin taking graduate coursework for the fall semester and Oct. 1 for the spring semester. If a student is determined to be a strong candidate for the 4+1 program they will be given permission to take graduate-level courses. The student will then formally apply to the graduate program for the semester after they complete the bachelor’s degree program.

All applications must be submitted to the contact electronically. Each electronic application packet should be sent in one email and include the documents listed below.

Biomedical informatics, BS / Biomedical informatics, MS

• Copy of unofficial ASU transcript (3.0 minimum)
• Statement of purpose (1-2 pages)
• Three (3) letters of recommendation from academic sources are preferred.

Clinical exercise science, BS / Clinical exercise physiology, MS

• Copy of unofficial ASU transcript (3.0 minimum)
• Personal statement (1-2 pages)
• Three (3) letters of recommendation
  • Two of the letters must be from faculty members within the College of Health Solutions. The third letter needs to be from Clinical Professor Donna Cataldo, donna.cataldo@asu.edu.

Clinical exercise science, BS / Physical activity and health, MS

• Copy of unofficial ASU transcript (3.0 minimum)
• Personal statement (1-2 pages)
  • Within this statement, identify the faculty member in the major that will serve as the 4+1 advisor. Be sure to request this of the faculty member before identifying them.
• Letters of recommendation
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation will be requested when officially applying. Two of the letters must be from faculty members within the College of Health Solutions.

Dietetics, BS / Nutritional science, MS

• Paper Application
• Copy of unofficial ASU transcript (3.0 minimum GPA)
• Personal statement: provide a 1-2 page personal statement that:
  1. Describes the significant professional responsibilities you have held.
  2. States your professional goals and reasons for desiring to enroll in this ASU MS program.
  3. Describes your strengths that will help you succeed in the program and in reaching your professional goals.
  4. Indicates your personal research interests, including any previous research experience you may have acquired.
• Three (3) letters of recommendation:
  • Letters of recommendation should be written by those who can speak to your aptitude for research and master’s level coursework.
  • One letter must be from an ASU nutrition faculty member.

Kinesiology, BS / Clinical exercise physiology, MS

Speech and hearing science, BS / Auditory and language neuroscience, MS

• Copy of unofficial ASU transcript (3.0 minimum)
• Three (3) letters of recommendation.
  • Letters of recommendation should be written by instructors, research mentors and/or clinical supervisors who can speak to your aptitude for research and master’s level coursework.
• Personal statement
  • Please include in your statement three potential research mentors with whom you would like to work, and why. The program will work to pair students with mentors based on research and training interests.

Thunderbird application packet

Refer to Thunderbird’s Master of Global Management degree page for more information and contact admissions.tbird@asu.edu before starting the admissions process. Note the application deadlines for the 4+1 accelerated programs with Thunderbird, as they are different from the deadlines at the College of Health Solutions.

Program completion expectations

• These programs are designed to be completed in five (5) years total.
• Students are expected to complete their undergraduate degree within one year of acceptance to this program.
• Students not able to complete the undergraduate portion of the degree within four years and the MS degree in one year may not be allowed to remain in the program.

Scholarships, assistantships, insurance and awards

• Some scholarships and awards may be affected by admission to the 4+1 program, as this changes a student's status from undergraduate to graduate. Students are advised to check with the specifications of their awards with the ASU financial aid office to see if this will affect compensation packages.
• Students admitted into the 4+1 program are not entitled to teaching assistantships, health insurance or other graduate awards.

Meetings requirement

• Students admitted to the program will be required to attend two meetings annually with the graduate director of their unit and their designated faculty mentor.
